OS Week 05 Assignment #2: How Low (Memory) Can You Go?
How much (minimum) RAM is needed to boot your Debian Guest?
Make sure you have a recent
backup
of your current Debian Guest!
Rename/clone your current Debian Virtual Guest to (e.g.) “LOW-MEMORY”
Try to boot the Virtual Guest with a Memory Base size of 999 MB.
For VirtualBox,
see setting System: Motherboard

For UTM MacoS,
see setting UTM: Hardware: System
.
How Low Can You Go?
512 MB?
256 MB?
And less?
Take Note – of how much memory – when the Linux kernel:
Still boots NORMAL (e.g.,
500 MB
).
Still boots but with unusual messages (e.g., 450 MB).
Went panic (e.g., 400 MB).
Boot the Linux kernel with 10-20% more Memory Base above.
E.g., for 500MB, then boot with 550 MB memory
.
