OS Week 05 Assignment #3: How Low (Memory) Can You Go?

  • How much (minimum) RAM is needed to boot your Debian Guest?
  • Make sure you have a recent backup of your current Debian Guest!
  • Rename/clone your current Debian Virtual Guest to (e.g.) “LOW-MEMORY”. For this WEEK 05 only, use this “LOW-MEMORY” version. Remember to switch back to the regular memory version the following week.
  • Try to boot the Virtual Guest with a Memory Base size of 999 MB.
  • How Low Can You Go?
    • 512 MB?
    • 256 MB?
    • And less?
  • Take Note – of how much memory – when the Linux kernel:
    • Still boots NORMAL (e.g., 500 MB).
    • Still boots but with unusual messages (e.g., 450 MB).
    • Went panic (e.g., 400 MB).
  • Boot the Linux kernel with 10-20% more Memory Base above.
    • E.g., for 500MB, then boot with 550 MB memory.
  • Report The Result at POPQUIZ W05-2 (SCELE).
